Evensong at Askerswell, 7th October 2012

Fresh (ish) from Max Gate we went directly – unless one was a shepherdess – to Askerswell for Harvest Evensong. Again, the layout of the church favoured playing and singing from the west end. Nonetheless it was rather crowded; because of poor prior communication the local ringers felt awkward about pushing through to their ropes, so they went home. The format of the evensong was very similar to that at Halstock, but Psalm 65 had a particularly good airing with both Thou visitest the Earth and Eaton. The anthem was The Harvest, the hymns were All people that on Earth do dwell, Come ye thankful people come, We plough the fields and scatter and Jesus shall reign …(Giberalter). We sang The Halsway Grace with fervour for Harvest Fare was in the offing and it had been a long afternoon especially if one was a shepherdess.
