Evensong at Halstock, 30 September 2012

We sang for a special evensong at which a new stained-glass window was dedicated. The vicar arrived resplendent in period costume with a very dashing hat. After a recce at the church we had arranged to sing from the west end although from ground level as there is no gallery. The congregation responded well to facing the music. The part of the Clerk was taken by the captain of the bell-tower so the ringers amongst us were invited to take a rope. Appropriately the new window features a bell design. We decided to use some of Thomas Clarke’s music this autumn. This evening we used his Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis with Psalm 150 NV as an anthem. The introit was Thou visitest the Earth and we used our favourite Bridport Responses. The hymns were Ken’s Evening Hymn, All people that on earth do dwell, We plough the fields and scatter and Teach me my God and King – by no means all gallery tunes but a happy enough marrying of traditions!
